Diabetic Retinopathy (DR):

Diabetes is known to affect the various organs of the body like eye, kidney, nerves etc. When it affects the eye, that condition is called as Diabetic Retinopathy. It is one of the leading causes for blindness in the world. The students of ESO are actively participating in screening camps conducted by Diabetic Retinopathy project of Sankara Nethralaya. |

Glaucoma Awareness

Glaucoma, otherwise called as “Silent thief” is one of the leading causes for blindness throughout the world. The students of ESO and the optometrists screen for Glaucoma by checking visual acuity, intra ocular pressure (IOP) and evaluating the optic nerve head. They help spread information about Glaucoma to the public on the occasion of the World Glaucoma Day. |

Teleophthalmology camps

Tele ophthalmology is one of the departments of Sankara Nethralaya for the benefit of rural people to get tertiary eye care. The students of ESO also participate in those camps and serve the rural people. |

World Sight Day
|

|
Every year, on the second Thursday of October, World Sight Day is celebrated. On this day, ESO students actively participate in many community activities to create awareness on many sight threatening eye diseases. Apart from the awareness sessions, competitions on eye and vision care topics for school students are also conducted. |

Vision Screening
|
| |
|
Students are given the opportunity of participating in the vision screening for the public, especially the school children right from the third year level. Every week they attend one screening camp and have the opportunity of screening at least 200-300 people. From the year 2006 – 2008, students have done 73 cataract screening camps, 36 general screening camps and 30 school screening camps. So, on an average students are screening approximately 8,000 people per year. |

Exhibition

1992 World Optometry Day celebration celebrated for the first time in India. Exhibitions were conducted every year. The aim of the exhibition is to create awareness among the students and the local community about various eye ailments. |

Awareness Programs
|
| |
|
Awareness sessions are conducted for industrial workers, corporate staff and the public on eye care, eye donation and eye safety. Similar sessions on vision in children, computer vision syndrome, eye injuries - first aid and prevention are also held. |

Career Guidance programs
|
| |
|
Twenty two schools and 10,000 students in Chennai received ‘A career Guidance Program on Optometry’ from Jan 09- December 2009. |
