All Optometry students are posted and get training in the various diagnostic and therapeutic fields of Optometry. Students are trained extensively in contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy, Orthoptics, Paediatric Clinics, computer vision clinic and all diagnostic procedures like Biometry, Visual Field Analysis, Electrodiagnostics and Corneal Topography. During the final year of the program, every student has the opportunity to examine at least 1,000 patients in the OPD alone under the supervision of senior Optometrists and Ophthalmologists. Students also get an opportunity to do vision screening for school children, and cataract screening for the aged. In 2008 alone, we screened 2,000 school students; around 3,000 people were screened for cataract. In terms of the clinical exposure, our optometrists have an edge over the others as they are attached to and undergo extensive training from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India, a tertiary eye care and referral hospital.
